If you search online for ways to fall asleep faster you might come across a lot of suggestions to just “release your problems” and “clear your mind,” but what does that really mean? Those suggestions are overly vague and unhelpful.
When it comes to getting to sleep faster, clearing your mind really is the key as it is almost always your thoughts that keep you awake at night. How to get ahold of this key is a whole different question. When it comes to clearing your mind effectively of disquieting thoughts, to just “release” isn’t much as far as guidance goes.
How to Effectively Clear Your Mind
We will go through two different relaxation techniques that will help you grab ahold of your ultimate goal of a better night’s rest.
Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing. Visualize your breathing patterns and the flow of air as it passes through your airways and backs out again. Search your body for tension and feel the tension leaving your body with each breath. Focus intently on the process of releasing tension and breathing to the point of not being able to think of other things. Push out other thoughts.
The basis of this technique is to keep your focus on an image or a story so that your mind can let go of any disquieting thoughts that keep you awake.
Get into a comfortable position and close your eyes. Do your best to relax your body and your muscles, then visualize a picture, memory, or story that you find calming. Something that is full of good feelings. It is different for everyone. For example, try to imagine a relaxing vacation or calming outdoor spot and put yourself there. The idea is to find something that lets you focus and let go of other thoughts. It might take some practice, but push out the disquieting thoughts whenever they enter.
